At the ESPN event, we had the opportunity to speak with Reza Akbari, who shared insights into an innovative approach aimed at supporting layer longevity in poultry production.

Reza explained that the industry is moving toward extending the laying cycle of hens, with the ambitious goal of achieving 500 eggs over 100 weeks of age. This trend, however, comes with challenges—particularly concerning liver health. The liver plays a critical metabolic role, producing up to 75% of the yolk’s fat content, making it central to both productivity and animal welfare.

His research focuses on developing a non-invasive method to assess liver composition—size, fat content, and triglycerides—using bioelectrical impedance technology (similar to what is found in smart scales or fitness trackers). This approach could help predict and prevent metabolic disorders such as fatty liver syndrome in laying hens, ultimately enhancing welfare and sustaining productivity.

Reza emphasized that this tool could become a game-changer for the poultry industry, offering a practical solution to monitor and manage liver health while meeting the demands of longer laying cycles.
